Summary

The role of Design Manager will lead a specialist team in technical design work for various engineering projects. Responsibilities include managing internal and external interfaces, commercial and contractual matters, and the production of deliverables. The Design Manager will act as a technical leader in the specific discipline within the organisation and therefore will be required to manage and develop a team to achieve business goals. Additionally, the role will oversee project budgets, control costs, and manage contract changes and variations.

 

Key Deliverables

As Design Manager, you will:

  • Coordinate client interfaces and provide the first point of contact for project opportunities.
  • Lead the team to ensure work is delivered on time and to a high standard, adhering to Freedom’s quality standards.
  • Act as the responsible engineer for ensuring design checks and reviews are undertaken. Perform self-checks, collaborate on peer checks and oversee design checks and reviews before giving the final approval.
  • Attend design package reviews and constructability reviews, holding ultimate technical sign-off.
  • Responsible for the teams competency and technical capability, ensuring the team stay up to date with industry standards and best practices and are operating within UK regulatory and statutory frameworks.
  • Oversee design from a risk management and health and safety perspective. Ensuring designs are undertaken within a strong safety-conscious team culture and are compliant with CDM2015.
  • Ensure that construction and operational requirements are met in the design and initiate or direct risk and hazard surveys (HAZOP/HAZID/HAZAN).
  • Support with generating sales leads, initiate sales activity and work with the relevant stakeholders to support the growth of the team.
  • Work alongside peers to manage the selection, negotiation, development, management and execution of contracts within the team.
  • Attend project budget review meetings and demonstrate a sound understanding of liabilities and commercial risks to support assessment of the project’s financial performance.
  • Use project management techniques to manage resources, budgets and programmes. Including accurate work estimation, stakeholder management (internal and external), and ensuring projects meet profit targets and are within contract conditions.
  • Contribute towards the development of Freedom standard quality systems and processes to ensure compliance with current industry standards and ensure best practice.

 

What We’re Looking For

Essential:

  • A bachelor’s or master’s degree in civil engineering, or a related engineering discipline.
  • Chartered Engineer status with a relevant professional institution (e.g., ICE, IStructE).
  • Circa 10 years’+ relevant UK-based experience in consultancy or contracting.
  • Strong knowledge of the UK Energy sector and experience of working with DNOs
  • Demonstrable experience in multi-disciplinary project management including budgetary and performance control, programming, and resource management.
  • Capable of reviewing detailed commercial and technical documentation.
  • Possesses appropriate health and safety training/qualifications for a senior engineering role including a working knowledge and experience of the CDM Regulations 2015.
  • Highly skilled in Autodesk packages and standard MS365 tools (Excel, Word, Outlook, etc.).
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills with the ability to communicate technical information to non-technical stakeholders.
  • The development and preparation of proposals and tenders. 

 

Desirable:

  •  Involvement in coordination and planning of construction phase activities
  • Experience in temporary works.
  • Familiarity with Common Data Environments (CDE) and BIM / Interface Management for workflows and digital delivery platforms.

Qualifications:

  •  Chartership with the UK Engineering Council and Membership of a Professional Institution
  • Degree (or equivalent) in Engineering
  • Full UK Driving License
